The Chamber of Commerce has informed more than 30 companies from la Rioja about a future carbon footprint certification for products thanks to a talk from the director of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change and of the Environmental Management Research Group, Pere Fullana.
Ruiz-Alejos, president of the chamber, has explained that, the objective of this conference is “sensitizing companies from la Rioja about the importance of implanting this certification, which is still not compulsory, but is demanded more and more as a measure of environmental respect when elaborating a product”.
Fullana, in his presentation before the companies from la Rioja has shared experiences “that are already taking place, one with Rioja’s government where we made a Life Cycle Analysis of a crianza Rioja wine, and afterwards we gave answers to the questions the sector had”.
The carbon footprint is a measure of the environmental impact that is caused by human actions, and is determined according to the amount of Green house effect gases produced while elaborating a product or giving a service, measured in units of carbon dioxide (CO2). By quantifying the carbon footprint, it is expected that companies can reduce their levels of pollution through a standard calculation of the emissions taking place during the production process.
Measuring and reducing carbon footprint is not only a question of caring for the environment, or a trend, its purpose is also increasing competitiveness, even staying in business, given that although the certificate is not compulsory yet, civil services are starting to support it.
Initiatives that have also come up from the private sector and large supermarket chains such as Tesco in England, Casino in France and Wal Mart in the USA, are already incorporating and asking their suppliers for carbon footprints on the label or packaging of the products they commercialize.
The business conference has been inaugurated by the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of La Rioja, José María Ruiz-Alejos, and also by Elvira Carles Brescoli, director of the Business and Climate Foundation.
